The dragon cave, which is truly a cavern that reaches far into the earth, is a massive place to find yourself in. While flowing water does stretch into the cavern and into the dark abyss, there is enough land on each side to not have to worry about ever falling into the water. It is an ecosystem onto itself. As all the grazers and random wild animals that come in for a drink, so do the predators that eat the grazers. Following the animals are all the insects and with them there, there will also be bats. As more and more animals wander in they start making a food web, so don't be surprised if you see a lost sheep inside the cavern and then off to the right a very hungry wolf.
The cavern itself stretches for miles and miles on end into the earth. This is not a good place for explorers for they'll find themselves wandering into the dark for as long as they can last and still see no end in sight. No one that has gone into the cavern has yet to return. At least all but the local loon who swears to have visited the cave and saw a massive black dragon before turning tail and running. This was how the rumors got started, though most doubt the word of a fool, but some head the words and don't bother going near the cavern anymore. Still many go and many do not come back. The people are assumed dead or lost too far back into the cavern to ever make their way out ever again.
The true story of the cavern is that it really is home to the largest species of dragon to walk the Earth. Only the old and the wise know the tale of the dragon. It was said that long ago that a massive black dragon had come to stake claim to the area. It started hunting the human explorers and settlers who had first come to the land. Finally having enough bloodshed, a lone warrior stepped forth to save the day. He had his black sword and shield enchanted by the witch who had made her home in the hills. So having his gear enchanted, he went off to face the dragon. As the fight progressed, the hero ended up on the dragons back and ran his way to the back of the neck where he thrust his sword down with all his might, lodging it through the incredibly strong, tough scales. The enchanted sword did its work, or at least a different kind of work.
The sword that was supposed to kill the dragon once it touched blood didn't do the job. It instead enchanted the dragon to the point where whoever held the sword could control the dragon and make it bow to the wielders whims. The poor hero of the tale ended up getting smashed against the side of the cavern wall as the dragon slammed its back into it. His body and shield fell to the ground as the sword stayed inlodged in the back of the dragon's neck. Only a minor nuisance to the massive beast. The dragon however, never showed itself to the humans again, the effects of the sword making him prefer to leave them alone. After all would you want to go to the very species that could get a hold of something that could make you do whatever they wish?
The sword and shield in question is currently in possession of the leader of the Order of the Dragon. The shield's enchantment is the one that works. It is able to stand the heat of a dragon's flames and block/repel it away from the weilder. It is tougher then normal shields for it was crafted with a strong metal and crafted by the best blacksmith they had back then. It is still as new as the day it had been crafted.
