With dictators controling five of the seven continents and a monarch in one, there isn't much left to be happy about. But no matter where you go, the phrase "the good old days" seems to pop up. Life just isn't quite what it use to be. But what if it could be?
What if you could be a real damsel in distress, waiting on her knight to slay the dragon? What if you could be a gentleman, dutifully serving Queen Victoria while courting the array of ladies? What if you could be a sweet Southern Belle, protecting the only life she knows while her world falls apart? What if you could be a rough and ready sheriff, defending his town from the outlaws that so often threaten your friends? What if you could be a hip cat or kitten, jitterbugging through life and trying not to think of the war just around the corner?
What if you could do it all?

She would never nominate herself, which is why I took the chance to do so for her. This girl had the idea to make this site, and put in an enormous amount of hours to make it as beautiful and functional as it is now. She isn’t the biggest poster, but she is always around and constantly dedicated. We owe a lot to her.
Alexis lost her father, was betrayed by her mother, and cruelly interrogated for information she did not have. After being taken in by the head of the Underground, she was handed off to the head of the NYC base. Even with all the help from higher ups, adjusting will be hard. Isn’t being a teenager hard enough?
Lane, the nervous New Yorker comes face to face with the head of the New York Underground. Beta has a proposition for Lane. How will he react? Having never been asked for so much before, can Lane deal with the expectations and pressure from the illegal organization he signed himself up for?

Beta, I have an assignment for you. Meet me at Headquarters the day you get this. –Who else would give you an assignment.
Roderick flipped the chopsticks around between his fingers after reading the message one more time. It was an elaborate system they had, but he appreciated it. His position did not come with a day job, yet he was usually busy. Actually most of the time Roderick worked through the night and slept in during the day, but he alternated. He’d broken his sleep schedule for this little trip and with a low profile and sneaking onto a transit he was still trying to figure out who the note was from. Tau rarely gave him assignments, though she did occasionally show up to mess with his head. Delta on the other hand usually didn’t have the sass to write “Who else would give you an assignment” as the signature. He supposed he’d find out when he got there, keeping his head down and reading a book of laws, abridged.
***
It had been a month and they told Delta she was going to be fine, but he still felt like treating her like glass. Having a day job certainly caused problems, but he’d spent a bit of his so called “free time” making some elaborate chopsticks for an old friend. He’d come back to pick up Alexis, and he had made the trip to see her a few times. It wasn’t a short trip from New York to California, but Alexis didn’t know that. Whenever she’d needed him there, Delta had made himself available. Twelve hours, back and forth, but he’d managed it, with a few choice disasters at his office where none of the employees were called in, and unexplainable things like that. Delta had called in a few assignments, but those spies needed practice anyway, or something like that.
Delta had three days off of work and he planned on making sure everything went well with Alexis. It was only one in the morning and with a knapsack of important items, Delta was ready. It was actually the most casual thing he’d worn in a while. A blank white t-shirt and blue jeans with tennis shoes. The knacksack and casual clothes matched, but there was no disguising the regular black mask from seeming out of place. But Delta made no mistakes with his mask, if he needed to blend in, no one would recognize him. He’d told Alexis to be prepared and ready for a long day, so he was hoping for no complications when he knocked on the door to the room she’d been staying in.

It had been a month since Alexis' torture and she still had marks on her body to show her mistreatment. Though she was finally out of all her casts, she had a brace on her arm to ease the pain some and help her get used to using it again. Oddly enough, her leg was perfectly fine and in good shape for being broken. Probably because it had a small break, nothing like her arm had had. All the cuts and bruises she had before faded, some into small pink scars and most of the bruises shifted into a yellowish fading away color, especially the ones on her ribs. Though the color was easing up, she was definitely still a bit tender. She was glad though to be able to walk around and see more things. When Delta wasn't here talking to her, or ignoring more questions she had she explored the California base. The people had heard of her, and what happened to her and her father, which tended to make people give her sorrowful looks. She hated that. She found it really hard to make any friends if they spent the time pitying her. She did like on the other hand how they tended to give her free stuff. That was how she got any possessions. She came and really didn't have any clothes or things, they took her in and gave her nice clothing, not a lot but she had a few outfits to get herself through a week. And she was also given the natural necessities such as hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, ect. She also heard strange comments about how uncanny it was for her to be friends with Delta. Something she found unusual and leaving her wanting to ask him why people were finding it so weird. She figured she'd ask once they were on a train ride with no where else to go, so he couldn't leave to avoid the question.
Alexis had packed all her things together in the day and rested in her room for the rest of it. She knew Delta would come pick her up late at night when she would generally be sleeping, so she figured she'd sleep some during the day and just be awake for when he came to get her.
She laid on her bed with her eyes closed and her mind racing. Where were they going? Would she like it there? Would she make friends? Find a job? All these concerns were genuine concerns. She was practically living on her own now. She didn't have her father living here with her like he would have liked and her mother was definitely out of the loop. She did turn Alexis in after all. The only person she really knows now is Delta. He was her only real friend anymore.
A tapping came from the other side of the door and her eyes blinked open. Another tap and it finally registered to her that Delta was here. She eased herself out of the bed slowly and grabbed her duffle-bag that was lightly packed with her things. She picked it up with her non-braced hand and swung it over her shoulder. She winced as it brushed against a bruise or two but didn't care. A third knock and she finally opened the door. Her dark eyes rested on Delta, she smiled up at him and stepped out of the room.
"Hey," she greeted him as she shut the door behind her. She looked him over, a tad surprised at his clothing. He was dressed rather casual for once. In fact she didn't feel like she was underdressed when she was with him for the first time since he brought her here. Alexis was dressed in skinny jeans, a pink tank top with a long loose dark blue sweater that was left unbuttoned, and a pink and blue plaid scarf wrapped around her neck. Her feet sported simple flats since she wasn't feeling brave enough to have her weaker leg wear heels. Her black hair was up in a loose pony tail, some of her big loose curls coming down at the sides as well as her bangs.
"Ready?" She asked stepping away from the door, slightly eager to get into a new chapter in her life.

Delta adjusted his mask a bit contemplating how awkward it was. He wore a mask most of the time, especially when he was on assignment, but since his outfit was meant for him to blend in, to a point, he knew something needed to be done about the mask.
“Hey.” Alexis said, closing the door behind her. Delta arched an eye brow, though you couldn’t really tell behind the mask. In UA there wasn’t a formal dress code, but bright colors did attract a lot of suspicion, and in a government that could kidnap and torture you on a whim, most people tried not to stand out. But this was Alexis Sorelli, and Delta had noticed she was excited about breaking free from her captive lifestyle. The skinny jeans weren’t too much, the pink tank top struck him as a bit bright and revealing, but he knew that was foolish, he’d seen worse. It was probably that she was just coming out of a month long stay after nearly dying, and he was exceptionally protective of her, considering how little he knew her. The dark blue sweater and the plaid scarf, the scarf was what put Delta over the edge.
“Ready?” She asked, Delta nodded, he didn’t need to ask where she’d gotten the clothes, The Underground had some friendly people. Also some people like himself, but they cared about each other, that was one of their strongest points.
“You know,” Delta said, opening one of the stray closets and pulling out a grey hooded sweatshirt, “bright colors draw attention.” He slipped the thing on, adjusting his mask and beginning to walk again, making sure Alexis was following him, “But that’s not important, we aren’t going to be in public for very long anyway.” He said.
They went out a side exit that had long since stopped having an emergency exit door sign. The moon was out and it was the only light by which they could see since there were no working street lights in that area. Delta knew if anyone saw them they would probably be stopped, but they couldn’t stop. A mask was a pretty big tip off that someone was suspicious, but he wasn’t taking it off. Actually most people would know Alexis’ face by then, so either of them would be in trouble. And if they were brought in Delta’s face would be scanned to check him up, and the fact that his file had been destroyed a long time ago meant they’d have a few unpleasant questions. He could deal with it, but it would still be an inconvenience, and he didn’t want to think about Alexis being in that situation again.
Back alleys in silence and finally they climbed in through an open window in one of the abandoned buildings. Delta walked down a hallway and then down two spiral staircases, going slow to make sure Alexis could keep up, and then stopped at the door at the bottom, knocking he waited.
The door opened an inch and a body builder looking man stepped out. He wore a government suit and had a gun in the holster, he gave Delta a dark glare and didn’t spare a glance for Alexis, “You must not know where you are, there is an official meeting going on, and if you leave quietly now you won’t have any trouble.”
Delta had kept his head down but at that he looked up, “I’m Delta.” The comment and the mask seemed to register to the guard who gave him one more distrusting look as if to say prove it, “If I weren’t I wouldn’t know I have an arranged trip, be wearing my mask, or know not to believe you are actually part of the government. Are we understood?”
“Yes, sir.” The man said, adopting a very respectful tone and opening the door for the two of them, Delta let Alexis walk in front of him and stepped through the door. Inside was a regular sub way station. The train was regular size, as Delta knew, because it was abandoned there and they didn’t feel the need to cut it into parts. Also about ten other spies and fifteen members of The Underground were wandering around before boarding. Rations, an office, security, and the train personnel were all within sight. Things were being loaded on and he saw two spies look at him and start talking. The difference between the spies and members was obvious, at least to him. Spies were more simply dressed, usually carrying something small but well protected, and they didn’t draw attention to themselves, but seemed to be looking at everything at once. The members were more laid back, not constantly on edge, and Delta supposed that was healthier, but not as safe.
“We should be leaving in a few minutes, it is a seven hour ride, we’ll be changing trains in about four hours, there is a bathroom on the train, food, blankets, some books, those can be found on the train.” Delta said, thinking about previous rides. He never had a problem being entertained, and he’d riden so many times it was second nature to him, but he thought he’d best give Alexis a brief explanation, “Suffice to say things are a lot different than the government transportation, if you have any questions, you can ask me, or anyone else. Everyone down here is part of The Underground, so feel free to talk to anyone, just make sure I know you are on the train, when we are getting on and off.” He said simply.

“You know, bright colors draw attention.”
Alexis watched him grab a grey sweatshirt and then looked down at herself. Honestly she didn't think she was too bright at all. She could have gone worse. She could have worn her yellow top and white pants and purple heels, but she didn't. Plus they were going to be traveling in the dark anyway, what did it matter what she wore? No one would be able to really see the happiness inside the clothing from under the night sky.
"I can chan-" She paused as his voice broke into hers. This seemed to happen a lot.
“But that’s not important, we aren’t going to be in public for very long anyway."
Not bothering to say anything else, Alexis simply nodded and followed him out onto the street. The cool air hit her cheeks rudely and the cold air made her snap her eyes shut for a second to get used to the feel. How long has it been since she has been outside in the night? Or at all? She took a deep breath and inhaled the fresh air happily. Her stomach turned with a kind of fluttery feel. She was excited about the move and new chapter in her life and then at the same time she was very scared. What was going to happen to her? Would she have a role in this community other than a member? Would they allow her to do things like her father did?
That idea kind of excited her too. What if she got to eventually take the job her father had. It was in her blood was it not? It had to be since he did it. Though, it really wasn't fair since she hadn't ever known of what he did, and still doesn't. She got the general idea from Delta but he wasn't letting in any details. Plus, her questioning started to slow down around the second week when she couldn't really get much more out of him. From then on she was just wanting to have his company, and he didn't seem to him providing it.
Delta lead Alexis back into the alleys and she blinked around growing nervous. The dark alleys were never a good place to be in the movies she had seen in the last month. All of them a bit older with exciting and fun plots, scandalous clothing and raunchy scenes. Well, to us 2009 people it wasn't that bad, but to her, who has had a sheltered and restricted life from the government, it was a big shocker that they let such a thing go on film! She stopped when he stopped and looked behind her, the streets were dead. No one was around as usual since it was late at night and most people were in bed. Delta knocked on the door, making her turn her attention back onto him.
“You must not know where you are, there is an official meeting going on, and if you leave quietly now you won’t have any trouble.”
“I’m Delta. If I weren’t I wouldn’t know I have an arranged trip, be wearing my mask, or know not to believe you are actually part of the government. Are we understood?”
For a split second Alexis was sure whatever Delta was doing wasn't going to work. They weren't going to get in. But before she got to tell Delta 'never mind' the man acted as if he was talked to by an officer, or an official. Was Delta someone important and he did not say so? If so, why didn't he?
“Yes, sir.”
The man stepped aside, holding the door open for Alexis as she stepped in and then for Delta who followed her. Alexis' eyes blinked and looked around the underground station. Plenty of people were standing around with suitcases, waiting for the train, and others were dressed in daily clothes from the outside life. Perhaps spies? She looked around taking in the sight of the station, it wasn't glamorous but it was definitely used and had a kind of safe feeling in it.
“We should be leaving in a few minutes, it is a seven hour ride, we’ll be changing trains in about four hours, there is a bathroom on the train, food, blankets, some books, those can be found on the train. Suffice to say things are a lot different than the government transportation, if you have any questions, you can ask me, or anyone else. Everyone down here is part of The Underground, so feel free to talk to anyone, just make sure I know you are on the train, when we are getting on and off.”
"I'll just stay with you," Alexis said quietly averting her eyes from Delta to the site around her, watching carefully and taking it all in.

Delta had a lot of responsibilities; he had to maintain a disguise, he had to maintain a day job, he had to occasionally update the code, he had to translate his mail, he had to do his laundry, get groceries, clean his house obsessively, and that didn’t count when he actually had to communicate with Beta, Tau, or go back to the Kansas base. So once Alexis was with Beta, Delta planned on getting his life back in order.
When Delta gave the options to Alexis, she quietly answered “I’ll just stay with you,” Delta shrugged at that, it was her choice. He came close to making eye contact with a young boy who saw his mask. The hooded sweatshirt did well to disguise Delta for the most but that boy seemed like he knew who Delta was, unlike Alexis. He planned on keeping it that way. Seven hours was a long time for questioning, and Delta couldn’t conveniently avoid all of her questions. If she found out he was the leader of the underground, which he gathered she had not, though he hadn’t been hiding it on purpose, she would no doubt have a lot of questions.
“Alright, I am going to get a seat.” He said, walking toward the train. Inside it looked like a normal subway car, but on the other side there were build in crates in front of the old doors, Delta knew that things for the ride were stashed there, but he didn’t need any. He headed to the back of the subway, where he knew few people would choose to sit. It was far from the driver, it was farthest from the bathrooms, and there was just something foreboding about it, but Delta liked it there. He liked it because he could see out the big back window, watching tracks fly backward, or so it seemed, and because he could get work done.
Delta rummaged through one of the back boxes until he came across a pair of sunglasses. He smirked but didn’t put them on, sunglasses didn’t work with his mask besides, so he put them back in the crate and sat down, putting a hand over his knap-sack out of habit,
“So, Miss Sorelli, do you like subways?” Delta asked casually, looking fairly relaxes as he put his hood down.

Alexis simply followed Delta into the car. Her eyes were casting curious looks around the place, since she had never been on a subway before, or even near a subway station. She was always awestruck by how the people dressed. They were all so free and uncaring. Her life consisted of strict rules and policies that had to be followed. She felt slightly upset with how much time she wasted following them. Years of her life had been controlled and wasted. Now that she had this sudden freedom what was she going to do? Go wild with colors in clothing? Party all night? Do things she hadn't even seen or thought of before? The excitement burned at her insides as she felt the need to run around and express the feeling she had inside her. Fear and anxiousness ran through her bones.
Delta stepped inside the train and she followed him. There were some people already sitting and waiting for it to, which would be in five minutes according to the announcements, and there were boxes she guessed that held things they might need on the way to where ever they were going. Delta uncannily went for the back seats that seemed to be deserted. Everyone else favored the middle or front seats. Perhaps they just felt more involved by sitting there. Or they liked the fact that there was more light. Alexis liked that fact. She kind of wanted to ask Delta to shift up a seat or two but at the same time, once he sat down he was almost at peace. Maybe she just needed to relax.
Alexis sat down in the seat across from him. She lifted up her feet so she sat indian style and leaned against the window, instead of the seat. The light was dim, much like the room was where she was held captive. And it was cold. It wasn't so pleasant to her as it seemed to be to him. It brought her bad memories.
“So, Miss Sorelli, do you like subways?”
"You know, I consider you a friend, you can call me Alex or Alexis. You don't have to be so polite," she said with her eyes looking down at her shoes. Was she over stepping her bounds? Defining their "relationship" if that's what you want to call it, as a "friendship". Did he even have friends? Most of the time people seemed to only talk to him as someone else, someone higher. Never in a joking or friendly manner. And if he did have friends, would he even consider her as one?
"And, this is my first time being on one." She mumbled, lifting her head up to look at him. "My family never really went anywhere on train. They just used my mothers work car to get to places." She shrugged with a small smile on her lips, "So far it's a neat experience."

When Delta asked Alexis if she liked subways he didn’t think too much of it, it was a polite question, and a fair amount of people had in fact ridden the subway. It was actually quite peaceful comparatively. Less rules were enforced. If you didn’t start a fight on a subway, you could relax for twelve hours, in move cases. It was, to Delta, more comforting than sleeping in his own bed, or it had been at one point in his life.
“You know, I consider you a friend,” She said first, Delta arched an eye brow at her, something most people would miss behind the mask. A friend? Delta didn’t really have friends, with vague, and awkward, exception of Beta and Tau. Tau saw a lighter side of Delta that he kept secret from most people, and Beta, whether he saw or not, knew things about Delta that Delta would never be able to keep from him. But other than those two, who he often didn’t attempt to be friends with, Delta didn’t have friends. And more than that, people didn’t consider themselves to be friends with Delta either.
“You can call me Alex or Alexis. You don’t have to be so polite.” She finished, looking down. Delta took note that she preferred to be called by her first name. He had assumed that, of course, but politeness, or more formality was mandatory for Delta in his line of work. But even though Delta didn’t consider Alexis his friend, by no fault of her own, he had some strange attachment to her that he hadn’t found with anyone else. He avoided thinking about it, but it was hard to ignore when he made decisions about her welfare.
“And, this is my first time being on one. My family never really went anywhere on train. They just used my mother’s work car to get to places. So far it’s a neat experience.”
“Mmm, yes, well most people find subways to be enjoyable, I suspect.” Delta conceded, “I suppose it is one of the few places I believe to be genuinely safe.” He knew if Alexis didn’t insist on making conversation the entire way he was going to take a nap. He made sure to be rested for work, but that was rather difficult when he believed few places to be safe. Maybe if he was in Beta’s bedroom he would feel safe, since Beta would be working on the other side of the only entrance, and was capable in many aspects, especially including protection. There was a reason Delta had asked him to be at Headquarters, after all.
“So, “ Delta said as he noticed people were piling into the subway, “have any expectations for your new life?” It was a question for a few reasons. For conversation sake, to find out if she knew what was coming, and to find out if there was some preference of hers that Delta might be able to accommodate without it being a safety risk.

Delta didn't really respond to her request to calling her just Alex or Alexis. Alexis got the impression that it didn't happen very often with him. It was strange. Everyone saw him with respect, or he seemed to demand it just in the way he walked/talked. Here she was demanding less formality and a bit more friend like, something the other people around here didn't seem to offer or try to have with him. Alexis looked up at him, her eyes soaking in his appearance. Maybe he was something she didn't know, or he just intimidated the others. That always seemed to happen. Especially at high school. Another kid may be more mature than the others around it, and the other kids were intimidated and unsure of how to be. Perhaps that was what was going on.
“Mmm, yes, well most people find subways to be enjoyable, I suspect. I suppose it is one of the few places I believe to be genuinely safe.”
Alexis didn't understand. She didn't really feel all that safe. She felt more safe at her house, where she was evicted and forced into governments hands. There was no warm and fuzzy feeling like a bed or blanket, or the sense of home. To her it was just a place that got you to another place, a place that you could call home and make comfortable. She shifted in her seat and looked out the window to stare at the brick wall. The train was roaring to life as everyone that had recently piled in, found a nice seat and relaxed. Their luggage tucked closely to themselves, some pulling out pillows to rest their head. Though she didn't feel safe or comforted, she could see others did.
“So, have any expectations for your new life?”
Her brown eyes averted from a family of three to Delta again. She shrugged. She really didn't know what to expect. Sure she had hopes, but she wasn't going to expect it to happen. She definitely came from a place where freedom was limited, so the only thing she was hoping for was perhaps freedom in how she dressed, lived, and had a different job than she did before. Definitely better than being some factory girl.
"I really don't know what to expect," she said reflecting on her thoughts. "I guess I can just hope. Hope to have a comfortable room or home, however you guys work the living thing. And perhaps to be able to experiment with fashions, and living quarters." She shrugged, "I am sure I will be happy no matter what. I will be away from danger."
She looked around, everyone was into their own thing and not really giving Delta and her a lick of mind. The train started moving down the tracks, jerking her forward slightly. She quickly reseated herself and propped her legs up on the seat in front of her. She looked over at Delta, a small smile filling out her lips.
"So," she started, her voice wavering with nerves. What if he shotted down the conversation? "I have noticed people look at me strange when I am with you. Or they think it weird for me to talk of you as a friend. I have also noticed people aren't very... informal with you. Can you tell me why?"

And perhaps to be able to experiment with fashions, and living quarters. I am sure I will be happy no matter what. I will be away from danger.” Alexis said, causing Delta to frown,
“I wouldn’t say that much. Everyone is constantly in danger, that is why I find subways safest. People could blow up your building, or shoot you in your sleep, kidnap and interrogate you out of your bed. Not pleasant, no, I don’t think anyone is ever really safe in this continent.” He said, for once not even thinking about Alexis being taken from her home. But that was different, far different than from what he had gone through, for better or for worse.
“But, of course you will be safer, and as safe as I can arrange. You will have a lot of freedoms, and though I can’t particularly tell you what to expect, I know the man whose care you will be under will make sure you enjoy yourself.” He said, his expression less than pleased. Beta sometimes had more fun than Delta necessarily thought he should.
But then Alexis was smiling, something devious in the way she was doing it, and Delta did not approve, “So, I have noticed people look at me strange when I am with you. Or they think it weird for me to talk of you as a friend. I have also noticed people aren’t very… informal with you. Can you tell me why?”
Delta inwardly cringed. He wasn’t going to lie, and it would be inpolite to brush her question aside, and he supposed after this trip she probably wouldn’t see him for a long time, with the exception of a rare visit to Beta, which was very rare indeed. “I wouldn’t say they think it weird for you to talk to me as a friend, but I suppose I might just not be paying attention. Suffice to say people treat me with respect, formality if you will…” He paused noticablty, considering the way to answer it without saying I’m the Damien Fox of the Underground. Well, there was one very simple way of saying things, he cleared his expression and discomfort so that he was as calm as usual and admitted, “I suspect it has something to do with my being the head of The Underground.”

“I wouldn’t say that much. Everyone is constantly in danger, that is why I find subways safest. People could blow up your building, or shoot you in your sleep, kidnap and interrogate you out of your bed. Not pleasant, no, I don’t think anyone is ever really safe in this continent.”
Alexis looked at Delta, her heart giving a little sad sob as she did so. She was never going to be truly safe in this world, was she? It was all she ever wanted. She just wanted a place she could call a home, a place where she could comfortably sleep at night and not worry about being taken. She slept decently so far while she has been with this organization, but even so she didn't sleep a lot. Often at times she laid in her bed staring at her door till her eyes couldn't take it anymore and she had to close them just for an hour or two. She never informed Delta of this. She was afraid he'd think of her differently, perhaps not strong, or something. She wanted to be like her dad, and her dad was never scared of the dark or being roughed up. Of course he never had been through it till the very end.
“But, of course you will be safer, and as safe as I can arrange. You will have a lot of freedoms, and though I can’t particularly tell you what to expect, I know the man whose care you will be under will make sure you enjoy yourself.”
For some reason this didn't settle her. Like Delta said, no one was truly safe. So what will make her feel safe with this guy Delta is forcing to watch her? She almost wanted to ask but he was finally getting to her question. A question she had been waiting to ask him for a long time now, but never found the gumption to ask, and now here he was trapped in a train with her for a few hours, unable to dodge it. It was perfect timing.
“I wouldn’t say they think it weird for you to talk to me as a friend, but I suppose I might just not be paying attention. Suffice to say people treat me with respect, formality if you will… I suspect it has something to do with my being the head of The Underground.”
Alexis looked at him for a second, her eyes looking straight into his own. Was he being truthful? He looked back at her completely serious, no devious smile to indicate he was kidding. She nodded, taking him seriously. How was she going to act with him now? Different? She wrinkled her nose at the thought. Why would it be any different than it was when she first met him? Whether it changed or not, it certainly explained a lot. It explained why everyone looked at her funny, why others were slightly intimidated by him. He was pretty much this big superstar in The Underground and everyone treated him with respect, or formality just because of who he was.
"You seem a bit young," she started, looking over him again, "But I guess in history there has been younger leaders." She grinned at him and moved around so her back was leaned against the window and her feet lounged across the booth. "I would ask a lot more questions but I'm pretty sure you don't really want to chat now. Just one more, and then I want to sleep, or at least try too."
"Who is the friend that you have that is going to help me get settled?"

Well he hadn’t lied, but he had been glad Alexis had never gotten around to asking. He took for granted her ease around him, perhaps it never really mattered to him that he was so powerful, he’d never had a lot of friends in his life, so being intimidating just went along with things. But Alexis had finally asked, and finally he had told her his job title, so she knew why.
“You seem a bit young.” She said, Delta chuckled a bit, despite himself. A bit young, yeah, he knew that, “But I guess in history there has been younger leaders.”
“You don’t even know how old I actually am.” Delta pointed out. Hardly anyone knew how old he actually was, along with his name. But they could tell a general age about him. Alexis didn’t need to know how old he was, she didn’t need to know he was only twenty-eight, nor that he’d gotten his position at the age of twenty-one, or that he’d been groomed for years just for the sake of being the perfect leader for an illegal stand against the corrupt government. Beta knew more than he needed to, and that was enough for Delta.
“I would ask a lot more,” Wonderful… “but I’m pretty sure you don’t really want to chat now.” Would, ever, be an option? “Just one more, and then I want to sleep, or at least try too. Who is the friend that you have that is going to help me get settled?”
A smile spread across Delta’s face. Again a rare thing, but it was more common than his chuckle, “Well, I will let him speak for himself mostly. I call him Beta, but he will probably let you call him by his real name, he isn’t very particular about that. He is smart, but he is quite the schmoozer. Also, he is originally from California, but he isn’t allowed near there. But you will meet him later today, so you can ask him anything else, I’m sure he won’t mind.”

Alexis saw Delta's lips move into a smile and she couldn't help but do the same. He obviously thought of this person as a good friend. Someone he enjoyed being around. She hoped she would too. What if they didn't get along? Some fun settling in would be.
“Well, I will let him speak for himself mostly. I call him Beta, but he will probably let you call him by his real name, he isn’t very particular about that. Former Californian. They had something in common. Her home was now a place she wasn't allowed to get near either, for the sake of her safety though. If she did it would be likely that she would get caught again, beaten, and killed for not giving them information and running away in the first place. She shuddered at the thought. In no way did she want to get stuck with that again. She looked at her arm brace and a few of the scattered bruises that surrounded her arms. They were clearing up. They had slightly greenish tint to them. The deep purple color was pretty much gone.
"I'm sure we will get along," she finally said as she tore her eyes away from her arm brace. "I think I am just going to sleep now." Alexis muttered, moving around to grab a sweatshirt from her bag and a blanket. She rolled the sweatshirt in a ball, laid down and rested her head on the sweatshirt. She pulled the blanket over her body and curled her knees up to her chest, as she closed her eyes.
"Thank you, Delta," she said quietly. She then turned around and faced the back of the seat drifting into a light sleep.

“I’m sure we will get along.” Alexis conceded, Delta kept his mouth shut. He could have said that most women seemed to get along with Beta, but that could be misinterpreted, and it wasn’t important, “I think I am just going to sleep now. Thank you, Delta.” She said the last part quietly, falling asleep. How could Delta help but feel a strange protectiveness for her? She was a child, as far as he was concerned, and she was injured, scared, and being thrown into a new world.
So after Alexis had been asleep for a few minutes Delta walked around to make sure nothing was wrong in the immediate area, just to be his overly cautious self, and then lay down where he’d been sitting. It was comfortable, not as much as his bed, but more comfortable than most of the government subways. It might have had to do with the leader of the organization’s obsession with their subway system, maybe, perhaps, but Delta hadn’t asked for much.
The hours passed by as Delta slept peacefully, though always alert and on the brink of waking. When he felt the subway slow he sat upright, rubbed his eyes, and woke Alexis up. They changed trains without a problem and he stopped to exchange commented with the driver regarding security, nothing negative, and then sat again with Alexis in the back, where he promptly fell asleep. When they did arrive at the Kansas base Delta was in a fairly good mood, more so than earlier, especially since it was now a little past eight in the morning, and Beta would no doubt have found out what time the subway was expected in, and be waiting.
“C’mon, we can find you some clothes, bags, anything you might need to live in New York, and we can eat breakfast someplace. This is headquarters, so it has just about everything, a lot of people live here, and this is the freest place on the continent, and the safest, but entirely underground.” Delta said, walking away from the subway and getting acknowledgement from the guard there who was doing brief checks as people got off. They walked down a hallway and into a large, bustling open building, like a multi-level food court in an old style mall. The exception was that there were offices, food places, clothing places, most everything, while housing was farther away from the noise.
“Delta, sir, I suspect that it was in fact you sending me coded messages on eating utensils.” Someone said, and though he’d used the word sir it was in a teasing tone, but still respectful, “I thought it might also have been Tau, but I saw her this morning, it wasn’t her, so it had to be you.” Delta turned and saw his friend leaning against the wall right by the exit from the subway station. He had on black boots, black denim jeans, and a grey muscle shirt, his hair shaggy but not sloppy, and a friendly smile on his face, with a layer of stubble growing on it,
“Hello, Beta, this is Alexis Sorelli. She will be living with you from this point until changed need to be made.” Delta said calmly, gesturing between his co-worker and Alexis.
“Well isn’t this a surprise. An assignment is one thing, an attractive woman, completely different.” Beta smirked, Delta glared at him, and he shrugged, “Nice to meet you, Alexis, you can call me Roderick, or Beta, I suppose if you are so clearly formal as this one. I run the New York base, as it were, so you won’t need to worry about anything while you are with me.” He said, being his usual genial self, Delta said nothing else.

Sleeping made the train ride go much faster. Before she knew it, Delta was waking her up to hop onto the next train. On that train Delta back asleep quickly, and she simply sat in her seat. She was rather tired, but her muscles ached from being cramped up on the last seat. There was no way Alexis would be able fall asleep on this new train. So instead she comfortably situated herself and looked out the window. It was nothing interesting but her mind was mesmerized by the constant movement. It was almost like a trance. She didn't really move till the moving had stopped. She looked over to Delta who was already up and grabbing his bags. Where they there or switching to another train?
Alexis stood up and grabbed her bags with her good hand, swinging them to go across her shoulders. She followed Delta off the train and then moved towards a place that looked like an old mall. This was apparently where the food court took place.
“C’mon, we can find you some clothes, bags, anything you might need to live in New York, and we can eat breakfast someplace. This is headquarters, so it has just about everything, a lot of people live here, and this is the freest place on the continent, and the safest, but entirely underground.”
Alexis blushed slightly. She felt awkward taking all these handouts but what else was she suppose to do? It wasn't like she had her own money. She will have to get a job in New York, just so she can start getting her cash and then maybe able to take care of herself. She certainly didn't want to be a burden on anyone.
“Delta, sir, I suspect that it was in fact you sending me coded messages on eating utensils. I thought it might also have been Tau, but I saw her this morning, it wasn’t her, so it had to be you.”
A strangers voice rang through Alexis' ears. She turned to follow Delta's eyes and landed on a tall, muscled, good looking man that was fairly loosely dressed. His hair was long, something that was sort of uncommon for her to see above ground. Most kept their hair short and neat. Occasionally you will get the guy with long hair, but not often. It looked good on him she thought.
“Hello, Beta, this is Alexis Sorelli. She will be living with you from this point until changed need to be made.”
So businesslike, she thought as she rolled her eyes. She was sounding more and more like a job than anything else, and she wasn't sure how to take it. Was that a good thing? Or a bad annoying thing? Beta's eyes turned onto her, with a nice easy smile on his face. She blinked and smiled back. Was she staring? She hoped she wasn't.
“Well isn’t this a surprise. An assignment is one thing, an attractive woman, completely different."
Alexis' cheeks flushed to a deep red and she let out a slight giggle. Wow. She was feeling like she was back in junior high. How lame.
"Nice to meet you, Alexis, you can call me Roderick, or Beta, I suppose if you are so clearly formal as this one. I run the New York base, as it were, so you won’t need to worry about anything while you are with me.”
"Nice to meet you too, Roderick." She smiled and reached out her hand to get completely acquainted. Beta seemed like the business name Delta used to keep that formality. Roderick must be what his friends call him. Or people that felt like they could call them that. She was hoping to be on the friends side, more than the business side.

“Nice to meet you too, Roderick.” Alexis said, shaking Roderick’s hand. He smiled at her, agreeing with her decision to call him by his first name. There were people who called him Beta, people who called him Roderick, a few oddballs who called him Mr. Guth, he didn’t understand them. But with the anonymity of the Underground, it happened that sometimes people didn’t realize who one, or both of those names were, or that they were the same person. Delta had his mask on constantly, but Beta had his own security, some of that coming from the fact that he rarely spent time away from his base.
“You know, Delta, I was thinking.” Roderick began, watching as Delta slowly turned his eyes toward his underling, as Roderick never forgot was his position, “For someone who has that mask on all the time, you really should have some sort of hideous scar or something, I mean honestly, it needs a justification, don’t you think?”
“It has a justification.” Delta said, his calm tone mixed with a slightly annoyed attitude.
“Yes, yes, your secret life. Well it goes without saying that as the head of the whole underground you lead a secret life. But a secret life for a secret life? You weren’t this unusual back in the day.” Roderick said, pointing a finger teasingly at his friend, as if to accuse him. Delta half rolled his eyes and looked back at Alexis,
“I hope he does not drive you to certain insanity.” At that Roderick laughed slightly, “After eating, I will have to leave I think. I need to make arrangements to return to my so eloquent secret life. But Beta can easily help you get some things together after I leave. What do you feel like eating anyway?” He asked. With Beta around Delta was visibly more at ease, though still seriously and calm. But despite having seen him much more relaxed something struck Beta as odd, and he gave Delta a quick curious glance, which Delta ignored.
